Birth and Growth
For nearly every man in World War I who endured the dangers and hardships of camp, shore and battlefron, there was a woman serving at home to help make possible America's victory - his wife, mother, sister, daughter, or granddaughter.
The war was won, and the men and women of the rmed forces banded together in The American Legion to carry forward their services to the country in peace time. It wa only natural that the women of their families should desire to continue to serve with the. The result was the American Legion Auxiliary, the largest and most influential women's organization of its kind in the world today.
The establishment of an Auxiliary to The American Legion was provided for by the first National Convention of the Amrican Legion in 1919.
Purpose
The American Legion Auxiliary has one great purpose - "to contribute to the accomplishment of the aims and purposes of The american Legion". Except for the addition of those words, the Preamble to its National Constitution is nearly the same as that of The American Legion.
EDIT The charter for the Auxiliary to the Haslett American Legion, Post #269, was signed on ___________1938. (Should we refer to Chief Okemos Post as the first charter and then give the date of the charter when the name changed to the Stephen W. Frank Post #269?)
Preamble of the Constitution of
the American Auxiliary
For God and Country, we associate ourselves toether for the following purposes:
To uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States of America;
to maintain law and order;
to foster and perpetuate a one hundred percent Americanism;
to preserve the memories and incidents of our associations during tge Great Wars;
to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state and nation;
to combat the autocracy of both the classes and the masses;
to make right the master of might;
to promote peace and goodwill on earth;
to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom and democracy;
to participate in and contribute to the accomplishment of the aims and purposes of The American Legion;
to consecrate and sanctify our association by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.
Common Questions
Q: I am related to someone who served on active duty during one of the membership eligibilty dates. Can I join the Auxiliary of The American Legion?
A: If your relative who served on active duty during one of the membership eligibility dates and is a member of The American Legion, you may join the American Legion Auxiliary of The American Legion.
However, if the qualifying veteran is deceased you may join the appropriate organization, even if the qualifying veteran was not a member of The American Legion when living.
Contact one of the above members at Post #269, obtain, complete and return the application to the Auxiliary mailbox at the Post, and proudly join the AMERICAN LEGION AUXILIARY.
